Temperature Basics

What Is a Temperature Converter?

A Temperature Converter changes a temperature value from one scale into its equivalent value on another scale.

This tool supports Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. It can be useful when checking a weather forecast for a destination that uses a temperature scale you are less familiar with.

For example, a forecast of 30°C is equivalent to 86°F, while 68°F is equivalent to 20°C.

How to Use the Temperature Converter

01

Choose Any Scale

Start with Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin.

02

Enter the Temperature

Type the value you want to convert into the corresponding field.

03

Read the Other Values

The other two scales update immediately.

04

Use It for Travel

Compare destination forecasts with the temperature scale you know best.

How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

To convert a temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and then add 32.

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

Example:

(20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F

Therefore, 20°C = 68°F.

How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9.

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

Example:

(86 − 32) × 5/9 = 30°C

Therefore, 86°F = 30°C.

How to Convert Celsius to Kelvin

The Kelvin scale uses the same size degree interval as Celsius, but its zero point is different.

K = °C + 273.15

Example:

20°C + 273.15 = 293.15 K

How to Convert Kelvin to Celsius

Subtract 273.15 from the Kelvin value.

°C = K − 273.15

Example:

300 K − 273.15 = 26.85°C

How to Convert Fahrenheit to Kelvin

Fahrenheit can be converted to Kelvin by first applying the Fahrenheit to Celsius relationship and then shifting the result to the Kelvin scale.

K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15

For example:

68°F = 293.15 K

Celsius vs. Fahrenheit

°C

Celsius

Celsius is widely used internationally for weather, everyday temperature, science, and many other applications.

°F

Fahrenheit

Fahrenheit is commonly used for everyday weather temperatures in the United States and in some related contexts.

What Is Kelvin?

Kelvin is an absolute thermodynamic temperature scale used especially in science and engineering.

Unlike Celsius and Fahrenheit, Kelvin values are normally written without the degree symbol.

0 K = −273.15°C

Zero Kelvin corresponds to absolute zero.

Can Kelvin Be Negative?

On the ordinary thermodynamic Kelvin scale used by this calculator, values below 0 K are not valid.

For that reason, if you enter a negative Kelvin value, the calculator displays a warning instead of treating it as an ordinary physical temperature.

Useful Celsius and Fahrenheit Comparisons

−20°C −4°F
−10°C 14°F
0°C 32°F
10°C 50°F
20°C 68°F
25°C 77°F
30°C 86°F
35°C 95°F
40°C 104°F

Why Temperature Conversion Is Useful for Travel

Weather Forecasts

Understand a destination forecast when it uses an unfamiliar scale.

Packing

Convert forecast temperatures before deciding what clothing to bring.

Road Trips

Understand roadside, vehicle, or weather information shown in another scale.

Accommodation

Convert thermostat settings while staying in another country.

Outdoor Activities

Compare hiking, skiing, beach, or other activity temperatures.

Travel Planning

Compare seasonal temperatures across different destinations.

What Temperature Is Considered Hot or Cold?

There is no universal temperature that every traveler experiences as “hot,” “mild,” or “cold.”

Comfort depends on humidity, wind, sunlight, clothing, activity level, acclimatization, and personal preference.

The labels shown beside the thermometer in this tool are only broad visual categories, not safety or health classifications.

Why 0°C and 100°C Are Common Reference Points

At standard atmospheric pressure, pure water freezes at approximately 0°C and boils at approximately 100°C.

These values are useful reference points, but boiling temperature changes with atmospheric pressure. At higher altitude, for example, water generally boils at a lower temperature.

These reference points should not be treated as fixed values under all environmental conditions.

Temperature and Altitude

Travelers visiting mountain destinations may encounter lower air temperatures than nearby lower-elevation locations.

Temperature can vary significantly with altitude, weather systems, time of day, and local geography.

A temperature converter does not predict how temperature changes with elevation. It only converts the value you enter.

Temperature vs. “Feels Like” Temperature

A weather service may show both measured air temperature and a “feels like” or apparent temperature.

Apparent temperature can take additional factors into account, depending on the weather service and conditions.

This converter does not calculate heat index, wind chill, humidity effects, or apparent temperature. It only converts temperature scales.

Does This Tool Retrieve Live Weather?

No. The Temperature Converter performs mathematical unit conversions only.

It does not retrieve weather forecasts, current temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, or destination climate data.

Enter the temperature from the forecast or source you are using and convert it into another scale.

Use Temperature Conversion When Packing

If you are preparing for a destination that reports temperatures in an unfamiliar scale, convert the forecast first and then use the Packing List Generator to build a checklist for hot, cold, mild, or rainy travel.

Important Limitations

This calculator converts temperature values mathematically. It does not provide live weather, health guidance, climate predictions, or temperature-safety recommendations.

Weather can change quickly, and conditions such as wind, humidity, sunlight, precipitation, and altitude can affect how outdoor conditions feel.

For travel decisions that depend on weather, use a current and appropriate weather source in addition to this converter.
