What Is a Fuel Cost Calculator?

A Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a road trip may require and how much that fuel may cost based on trip distance, vehicle fuel efficiency, local fuel price, and the number of vehicles.

It can be useful when comparing driving costs, planning a road-trip budget, estimating a return journey, or splitting expected fuel expenses between travelers.

This calculator supports both common fuel-efficiency systems: miles per gallon (MPG) and liters per 100 kilometers (L/100 km).

How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Choose your measurement system. Select Miles / MPG or Kilometers / L/100 km.
  2. Enter the one-way trip distance. Use the distance from your starting point to your destination.
  3. Enter your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Use MPG for the US-style calculation or L/100 km for metric calculations.
  4. Enter the local fuel price. Use price per gallon or price per liter, depending on the selected system.
  5. Enter the number of travelers and vehicles. This allows the calculator to estimate cost per traveler and total fuel consumption across multiple vehicles.
  6. Select whether the trip includes a return journey. If enabled, the calculator doubles the entered one-way distance.

How Is Fuel Cost Calculated with MPG?

In the Miles / MPG system, fuel required is calculated by dividing trip distance by miles per gallon.

Gallons Required = Trip Distance ÷ MPG

The fuel cost is then:

Fuel Cost = Gallons Required × Price per Gallon

If multiple vehicles are used and each is assumed to have the same fuel efficiency, the cost is multiplied by the number of vehicles.

How Is Fuel Cost Calculated with L/100 km?

In the metric system, L/100 km tells you how many liters a vehicle uses to travel 100 kilometers.

Liters Required = (Distance in km ÷ 100) × L/100 km

Then:

Fuel Cost = Liters Required × Price per Liter

Fuel Cost Example Using MPG

Suppose a vehicle will travel 300 miles one way, averages 30 MPG, and fuel costs $3.50 per gallon.

300 miles ÷ 30 MPG = 10 gallons

One-way fuel cost:

10 gallons × $3.50 = $35

For a round trip:

Fuel Cost Example Using L/100 km

Suppose a car will travel 500 km and consumes 7.5 L/100 km. Fuel costs €1.80 per liter.

(500 ÷ 100) × 7.5 = 37.5 liters

Estimated fuel cost:

37.5 × €1.80 = €67.50

What Is MPG?

MPG means miles per gallon. It describes how many miles a vehicle can travel using one gallon of fuel.

A higher MPG generally means the vehicle uses less fuel to travel the same distance.

These labels are only a simple comparison. Actual efficiency varies by vehicle type and driving conditions.

What Does L/100 km Mean?

Liters per 100 kilometers measures how many liters of fuel a vehicle uses to travel 100 km.

Unlike MPG, a lower L/100 km value generally represents better fuel efficiency.

One-Way vs. Round-Trip Fuel Cost

If you enter a one-way distance and select Include Return Trip, the calculator doubles that distance.

Round-Trip Distance = One-Way Distance × 2

This is appropriate when the return route is approximately the same distance as the outbound route.

If your return journey uses a substantially different route, calculate each leg separately or enter the complete distance manually with the return option disabled.

How to Calculate Fuel Cost per Traveler

If travelers are sharing the fuel expense equally, the estimated fuel cost can be divided by the number of travelers.

Cost per Traveler = Total Fuel Cost ÷ Number of Travelers

This is only an equal-split estimate. Your group may choose a different way to divide costs.

Fuel consumption can change depending on speed and driving style.

Traffic

Stop-and-go traffic can produce different fuel use than steady highway driving.

Terrain

Hills and mountain routes can affect fuel consumption.

Why Your Actual Fuel Cost May Be Different

The calculator assumes the fuel-efficiency value and fuel price you enter remain consistent for the trip.

Real-world costs can differ because fuel prices may change between locations and your vehicle may not achieve its expected MPG or L/100 km under actual driving conditions.

Stops, detours, traffic, weather, terrain, and additional driving at your destination can also increase the total distance.

How to Estimate Your Trip Distance

Use the actual route distance rather than straight-line distance between two locations. Road routes can be significantly longer because of highways, bridges, mountains, border crossings, or available roads.

If your route includes several stops, add the driving distance for each leg of the journey.
