See what makes up the flight duration

A single “flight time” can refer to different intervals. This calculator keeps three estimates separate. Cruise time comes from distance divided by wind-adjusted groundspeed. Airborne time adds your takeoff, climb, descent, and approach allowance. Gate-to-gate time adds the taxi and ground-movement allowance as well.

The separation makes the result easier to revise. If the distance and cruise speed are reliable but a busy airport usually causes longer taxiing, you can change only the ground allowance instead of distorting the airborne calculation.

How the wind adjustment should be interpreted

The wind input is a simplified along-route component. A headwind is subtracted from cruise airspeed and a tailwind is added. Real winds vary by altitude, position, and time, and a route may contain both favorable and unfavorable segments. The calculator therefore uses one constant component for the entire cruise estimate.

Do not enter the full reported wind speed unless it acts directly along the route. Crosswind requires vector analysis and route-specific headings, which this tool does not perform. For a passenger planning estimate, use a conservative value or compare several wind scenarios.

Scope note: This is an educational planning calculator, not flight-planning or operational software. Pilots and operators must use approved data, procedures, performance tools, weather sources, reserves, and regulatory requirements.

Understanding the time-zone conversion

When a departure is entered, the calculator converts the origin’s local time to UTC using the origin offset, adds the gate-to-gate duration, and then applies the destination offset. This can correctly move the displayed arrival to the previous or next calendar date.

Offsets must be entered manually because the tool has no airport or time-zone database. Daylight-saving rules may change by date and location, so verify both offsets for the actual travel day. The result does not interpret airport codes or automatically detect seasonal clock changes.

Limits of this calculator

  • It does not search airports, calculate a great-circle route, or account for airways, diversions, holding, or rerouting.
  • It treats cruise speed and wind as constant across the entered distance.
  • It adds one user-defined allowance for all non-cruise airborne phases.
  • It does not include schedule padding, maintenance, gate delays, deicing, missed connections, or baggage delivery.
  • Its time-zone conversion depends entirely on the manually entered UTC offsets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between knots and nautical miles?

A nautical mile is a distance unit. One knot means one nautical mile per hour. The calculator can also convert statute miles, kilometers, mph, and km/h.

Is gate-to-gate time the same as time in the air?

No. In this calculator, gate-to-gate time includes the taxi and ground-movement allowance, while airborne time excludes it.

Can I enter distance in miles and speed in knots?

Yes. Distance and speed are converted internally to nautical miles and knots before the time calculation.

Why does a headwind increase the estimate?

A headwind reduces groundspeed in this simplified model. Covering the same distance at a lower groundspeed takes longer.

Does this calculate the distance between two airports?

No. Enter a distance from a source appropriate to your use. Airport lookup and route calculation would require external geographic data that this local tool does not use.

Does the arrival time handle daylight saving automatically?

No. Enter the UTC offset that applies at each location on the date of travel. The calculator applies those values exactly as entered.

Why might a scheduled duration be different?

Published schedules may contain operational padding and airline-specific assumptions. They can also reflect routes, congestion, aircraft type, seasonal winds, and airport procedures not represented here.
