What this calculator measures

A transparent estimate built from known inputs

The calculator estimates duration when you already know the driving distance and can choose a reasonable average moving speed. It separates time behind the wheel from planned stops and an optional delay allowance, so the result shows where the total comes from.

It also accepts mixed units. For example, you may enter distance in kilometers and speed in miles per hour. The calculator converts the values before dividing them. If you provide a departure date and time, the duration is added in your browser’s local time to produce an estimated arrival.

How to choose an average speed

Average moving speed is not the same as the speed limit. It represents the distance covered divided by the time the vehicle is moving. Urban roads, junctions, lower-speed sections, congestion, and weather may reduce it. If a trusted route planner provides distance and a no-stop duration, you can derive an implied average by dividing the route distance by that duration.

Avoid entering a speed you expect to maintain continuously. The tool is for scheduling, not for encouraging a particular driving speed. Always follow applicable limits and adjust to road, weather, visibility, traffic, vehicle, and personal conditions.

What the result includes—and what it does not

  • Included: converted distance and speed, calculated moving time, scheduled breaks, selected delay percentage, total duration, and optional local arrival time.
  • Not included: live traffic, road closures, route selection, weather, border queues, charging or refueling time unless entered as breaks, time zones, or ferry schedules.
  • Checkpoint assumption: planned breaks are distributed evenly through the moving portion of the trip.
  • Arrival assumption: the entered departure value and displayed arrival use the device’s local date and time without destination time-zone conversion.

Frequently asked questions

How is drive time calculated?

Distance is divided by average moving speed after units are converted. The selected delay percentage is applied to that moving time, and planned break minutes are then added.

Can I mix miles with kilometers per hour?

Yes. The tool converts both inputs to compatible units internally. The checkpoint distances are displayed using your selected distance unit.

Does the calculator use live traffic?

No. It has no map or traffic connection. Use the delay buffer to explore a cautious scenario, but consult a current route source before departure.

Why is departure time optional?

Duration can be calculated without a calendar value. Departure is only needed when you also want an estimated arrival date and time.

Does the arrival time adjust for a destination time zone?

No. Both departure and arrival are interpreted in your browser’s local time. Handle time-zone changes separately for cross-zone journeys.

What should I include as a break?

You can include planned meals, rest stops, refueling, or charging. The tool uses one average duration for every planned break, so add unusual stops manually when reviewing the result.

Can the result replace a navigation app?

No. It is a transparent planning calculator for known inputs. It does not choose a route, navigate, detect closures, or update during the drive.
