Why download speed and file size use different units

File sizes are normally displayed in bytes, such as MB or GB. Internet connection speeds are normally displayed in bits per second, such as Mbps. One byte contains eight bits, so a 100 MB file contains 800 megabits before considering the selected decimal or binary convention.

This distinction explains why dividing gigabytes directly by megabits per second gives the wrong answer. The calculator converts both values into compatible base units, applies your efficiency and bandwidth-sharing assumptions, and then divides file data by effective speed.

How to choose realistic inputs

  1. Prefer a measured speed: an advertised plan speed is a maximum target and may not represent current Wi-Fi or mobile performance.
  2. Match the file convention: storage providers may use decimal units while some operating systems report binary units. Select the convention that matches the displayed source.
  3. Account for competing downloads: if several large transfers run at once, increase the active-download count. The model divides bandwidth equally for clarity.
  4. Use efficiency as a range: calculate once with a cautious value and once with an optimistic value to create a planning window.
Important: This calculator does not test your internet connection. It estimates duration from the values you provide. A real download can speed up, slow down, pause, or be limited by the remote server.

What can change the actual download time?

  • Wi-Fi signal quality, interference, and distance from the router.
  • Congestion at home, on the local network, or at the internet provider.
  • A download server that sends data more slowly than your connection can receive it.
  • Protocol overhead, encryption, error correction, packet loss, and retransmission.
  • Speed limits imposed by a browser, application, cloud service, or device storage.
  • Variable mobile or satellite signal conditions.

The efficiency setting groups several of these effects into one adjustable assumption. It cannot predict a specific network, so the result should be treated as an estimate rather than a promised completion time.

Frequently asked questions

Is MB the same as Mbps?

No. MB commonly means megabytes and describes an amount of data. Mbps means megabits per second and describes a transfer rate. There are eight bits in one byte.

Why is the estimated time longer than file size divided by speed?

The units must first be made compatible. The calculator also reduces the entered line speed according to your efficiency and sharing settings, which usually produces a more cautious result.

Should I use Mbps or Gbps?

Choose the unit printed with your measured or advertised speed. For example, enter 500 with Mbps for a 500 Mbps connection, or 1 with Gbps for a 1 Gbps connection.

What efficiency percentage should I select?

There is no universal value. The default 90% is only a planning assumption. Lower it when the connection is unstable or heavily affected by overhead; use multiple calculations to see a reasonable range.

Does streaming count as an active download?

It consumes bandwidth, but not necessarily an equal share. You can increase the sharing count for a simple conservative estimate, although the equal-sharing model will not reproduce traffic prioritization or every device’s actual demand.

Why can a real download still be slower?

Your connection is only one part of the path. The source server, routing, Wi-Fi, storage speed, application limits, and changing network traffic can all reduce throughput.
