What Is Kelvin?

Zero Kelvin corresponds to absolute zero.
Can Kelvin Be Negative?
On the ordinary thermodynamic Kelvin scale used by this calculator, values below 0 K are not valid.
For that reason, if you enter a negative Kelvin value, the calculator displays a warning instead of treating it as an ordinary physical temperature.

Why 0°C and 100°C Are Common Reference Points
At standard atmospheric pressure, pure water freezes at approximately 0°C and boils at approximately 100°C.
These values are useful reference points, but boiling temperature changes with atmospheric pressure. At higher altitude, for example, water generally boils at a lower temperature.

Travelers visiting mountain destinations may encounter lower air temperatures than nearby lower-elevation locations.
Temperature can vary significantly with altitude, weather systems, time of day, and local geography.
